I'm sure that we can all agree that a bright healthy looking smile is attractive. What if I told you that you can keep your smile white and not break the bank? As a Registered Dental Hygienist I have seen many patients and helped many people keep a sparkly smile. Today I will tell you exactly how you can keep your teeth white with these 5 tips.
One of the basic characteristics of ballet dance is the external rotation of the legs, also known as turnout. A popular style of ballet is pointe which is danced on the tips of 3 toes. Pointe shoes have a reinforced toe box that is flat on the tip, creating an even surface for the dancer to stand on. These elements can all potentially cause severe injuries.
The rotation of the legs seen in ballet and pointe, occurs at the hip joint. This motion at the hip uses six deep muscles and is extremely important for proper movement. All six of these muscles connect the femur to the pelvis and are used to rotate the legs externally and internally. Many young ballet dancers are taught to use their feet as a guide for turnout. This focus on rotating out at the the feet can lead a dancer to only turnout at their feet instead of utilizing their hips, an unnatural occurrence, and can lead to knee and ankle injuries.
Pointe dancers need to have strong ankle muscles and good flexion in the ankles. I have seen students start pointe too early which has compromised the structure of their foot and leg bones and lead to very damaging injuries. Dance injuries are categorized as acute or new injuries and chronic injuries that develop over time.
Some common chronic injuries I see in my practice are stress fractures, plantar fasciitis and patellar tendinitis. Chronic injuries develop from overuse and activities such as repetitive jumping and landing. Common acute injuries are ankle sprains, muscle cramps and broken toes. These occur from weak or fatigued muscles, instability when performing jump landings and incorrect technique.
Acute and chronic injuries can be prevented. In order to prevent injuries in dancers, specifically ballet dancers, you must incorporate exercises that help with flexibility, strength, posture, alignment, balance and mobility. I recommend adding pilates and yoga to your workouts 2-3 times per week.
Pilates helps strengthen the core and improves alignment. Pilates classes that use the reformer are not easily accessible for many and can get quite expensive. You can take a pilates mat class or even better find a local Rollology™ instructor. If you can not find one, you can get certified to become one yourself here: www.RollologyFitness.com.
Rollology™ targets each and every part of your body helping to strengthen core muscles, improve alignment, posture and balance. It helps strengthen arms and legs and can promote flexibility. You can also use the foam roller to self massage and release tight fascia and muscles. Make sure to MOBILIZE your fascia. Just stretching, or even too much stretching, can cause injuries if the fascia and muscles are immobile or stiff.
Yoga is great for gaining muscle strength, joint stability, balance and focus. Hatha yoga is a very common type of yoga and can likely be found in your area. Hatha yoga focuses on balance, breathing and flexibility. It will also help young dancers focus, stay centered and ease performance nerves.
I hope this helps your little dancer stay injury free and dancing for a long time! I will be launching ShopDrSuz.com. This is a brand new website that will have foot care solutions for all your foot, ankle and leg conditions. Stay tuned for more blog posts and information on keeping your feet, ankles and lower body healthy and injury free.
I have been utilizing a foam roller for pre-and post workout recovery for several years. It was just a little over a year ago when Alyson Limehouse, the founder of Rollology™ Fitness, invited me to one of her classes. I expected some stretching and using the roller for SMR or self-myofascial release massage but this class was way more than that!
Alyson began the class with direction on proper posture and alignment. While seated, the foam roller is placed behind you to help align your spine correctly. Alyson gives tips on how to appropriately breathe through each posture and takes the time to correct your alignment. One of my favorite sets of moves are the bride arms. These small movements target that underarm flab and are much more difficult than they look. We then transitioned to laying on top of the roller and focused on core strength and mobility moves. These flowed into sets of leg toning and lengthening exercises. The class also includes a set of foot and ankle exercises emphasizing the importance of strong, mobile and well aligned foot and ankle muscles, fascia and joints.
Rollology™ targets each and every part of your body helping to strengthen core muscles, improve alignment, posture and balance. It also helps strengthen arms and legs, can aid in decreasing cellulite and promotes flexibility. Another plus, is that the Rollology™ Fitness program can be modified for the elderly, those with injuries or people recovering from surgery. I recommend attending these classes as part of your workout or physical therapy routine on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. Once learning how to perform the movements correctly, you can definitely do them at home or whenever it is convenient. The beauty of this type of Pilates is that it can be done anywhere at any time.
Another health benefit is the treatment of "Tech Neck". Many of of us hold our heads forward and flexed down looking at our smart phones and laptops. Looking at our devices we lean forward and look down bringing the weight of our head into a position that causes it to be heavier putting more stress and strain on our bodies. Those prolonged periods of hunching over our screens are slowly causing our necks to stay in that more forward position. The strained tissues lose their pliability causing a lot of pain and dysfunction. Some may even experience neck pain, headaches/migraines and numbness/tension in your fingers. Tech neck is leading to an extremely unattractive posture called kyphosis or rounding of the upper back aka Dowager's Hump at a very early age! Rollology™ exercises teaches the body to go back into a neutral spine while engaging the core to help support the spine, neck and head. This helps to strengthen the neck muscles along with the shoulders to help prevent the head from coming forward. Your body will also be stretched to make the neck, head and shoulders more flexible.
Rollology fitness classes help make it possible to do every day activities and sports with ease and reduced pain. It is the perfect workout because it helps strengthen, stabilize, align, mobilize and stretch every part of your body in little over an hour. Anyone can participate no matter what age, gender or fitness level. All you need is a mat and a custom designed Rollology™ Roller. The Rollology™ Roller is a medium density roller that is custom designed for Rollology™ workouts, physical therapy, before or after exercise, yoga and massage therapy. "In 2018, you can do many forms of exercises that build and strengthen muscles but may also be setting you up for neck or back pain with surgery as the end result", says Alyson Limehouse. "Rollology™ not only strengthens and lengthens muscles it also works out the body in proper alignment and neutral spine. By focusing on alignment while exercising with Rollology, you can successfully workout to reduce the chances of surgeries in the future while creating a symmetrical and firm body."
Immediately following your first Rollology™ class, you can see and feel the difference in your posture and alignment. I soon decided to become a Rollologist™ (certified licensed rollology™ instructor). It is important for me to be able to provide my patients and clients a well-rounded treatment plan. Your feet and ankles are definitely your foundation for movement, but you do need a strong core, proper pelvic and spinal alignment and balance to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. I currently provide private sessions with my patients and plan on teaching classes beginning spring/summer 2018. For more information follow me on social media Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
Alyson Limehouse, Founder of Rollology™
Rollology™ was developed by Second Generation Master Pilates Instructor, Alyson Limehouse, who studied under Pilates Elder Lolita San Miguel. (Lolita is only one of two people that Joseph Pilates personally certified before he passed away in 1967.) Alyson has owned and operated Sunset Pilates Studio on Palm Beach Island for 16 years.
Alyson is very passionate about the art of sculpting the body through a balanced blend of strength and flexibility training, which improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up. Alyson created Rollology™ so that anybody can have a safe and effective work out that is affordable.

Biena Chickpea Snacks

You get a crunchy and flavorful snack in a healthy way. They have so many flavors such as ranch, honey roasted and even chocolate covered! Satisfy your craving for sweet or savory. Use code: DRSUZHEALS for 20% off your order of Biena chickpea snacks.
Hu Kitchen Organic Paleo|Vegan Chocolate Bars
Hu Kitchen is one of my favorite places to eat when I am in New York City. This company makes some of the BEST paleo products. Not only is Hu Kitchen Chocolate incredibly delicious, but their chocolate is also good for your health! There is no dairy, no gluten, no soy lecithin, no preservatives, no refined sugar, no cane sugar, no sugar alcohols and are non-GMO. They include 72% organic stone-ground cacao and are completely guilt free! My favorite flavor is the Hazelnut Butter Dark Chocolate.
GG® Scandinavian Bran Crispbreads
These high fiber, low calorie scandinavian snacks have continued to gain popularity in the United States for their health and weight loss benefits. GG® Scandinavian Bran Crispbreads were created in Norway by Gudner Gundersen in 1935. Gudner wanted to create a fiber-rich cracker that helped supplement his diet with extra fiber. He created his signature recipe with bran, rye flour, a hint of salt, and fresh water. The company has kept the original simple and healthy recipe. These crackers are great to add to any snack or meal as a replacement for bread or other high carb food. High fiber snacks help regulate blood sugar and aid in digestion of carbohydrates. I love topping mine with smoked salmon, avocado and eggs or making mini pizzas. Each cracker contains 4g of fiber, 20 calories and 2g net carbs.
Banza Chickpea Pasta
This year is all about the chickpeas LOL! But seriously, chickpeas make for a great alternative to wheat noodles. Banza pasta has double the protein, four times the fiber and almost half the net carbohydrates of other pastas. You can prepare any of your favorite pasta meals, salads or snacks the exact same way just by making the simple swap. They are naturally gluten free, have a relatively low glycemic index and taste great. I usually keep it simple and combine my pasta with garlic, lemon and fresh vegetables.

Four Sigmatic SuperFood Mushroom Products

These delicious edible mushroom blends and elixirs offer several health benefits, from nutritional to emotional to physical. They are also very tasty as a coffee, tea, hot cacao or added to smoothies. For example, reishi mushrooms help you relax, manage stress and sleep better. Pellu uses premium botanical actives and other ingredients with proven skin benefits. Immediately after using their products, I began to see clearer more radiant skin on my face and neck. This combination of products helps cleanse skin while improving wrinkles, decreasing redness and discoloration, restoring moisture, suppleness and a healthy glow. After using the renew cream, you wake up with a brighter complexion, firmer skin and, over time, decreased wrinkles and dark spots. The plant cells of damas rose and daffodils help calm and soothe skin while you sleep. There are absolutely no parabens, no harsh chemicals, GMO free and never tested on animals. Cooking At Home-Healthy Kitchen Gadgets
These make it so easy to cut vegetables. The Bella Hands Free Spiralizer, creates strands of zucchini, cucumber, potatoes and more. Use your twirled veggies as a substitute for regular pasta in stir-fry and Italian dishes.
Toss and chop your salad with just one simple tool. Turn any salad into a delicious chopped dish with the Trudeau Toss and Chop Salad Tongs. Make healthy homemade pizza right in your backyard with this portable pizza oven from cuisinart. This product has been a complete lifesaviour! I have been dealing with TMJ pain, headaches and neck pain for several years. After only a couple of 10-15 minute sessions with the neck saviour, I had decreased muscle tension and pain. This device stretches the neck to help reduce pain. It also relieves headaches, is a spinal alignment corrector, a posture tool and a Pilates and yoga aid. Stretching the neck is known as traction and is a treatment often used by therapists to help relieve symptoms such as neck pain, stiffness, muscle spasm, tension headaches and others. Since using the neck saviour, my need for pain medication has been significantly reduced. That is what wellness is about, reducing the need for over the counter and prescription medications and preventing chronic medical conditions.
CBD Oil Products
CBD oil products . There has been a recent increase in the use of CBD oils, supplements and other wellness goods. CBD hemp oil is made from high-CBD, low-THC hemp, unlike medical marijuana products, which are usually made from plants with high concentrations of psychoactive tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Because hemp contains only trace amounts of THC, these hemp oil products are non-psychoactive. CBD wellness products help decrease anxiety, reduce pain and inflammation and can relieve painful period cramps. If you are looking for CBD infused with essential oils for pain, massage therapy or CBD infused chocolates, ghee, coconut oil and other edible treats look no further! I recommend checking out Blue Ridge Hemp Co. This company has some amazing products that are simple and easy to incorporate into your life. Another company I recommend for CBD tinctures, topical lotions and CBD gummies (yes gummies!) is McGowan Medical (10% Off Code: DRSUHEALS). You need to sign up in order to shop but it is definitely worth it to receive e-mails with discounts and information. The owner is great and will help you with whatever you need.

What You Need to Know About Breast Health That Your Doctor Is Probably Not Telling You By Taylor Pardue
Thermography, the superior breast imaging system!
Many women have experienced at least one mammogram in their life. The experience is not pleasant in the slightest bit but most women think they have no other options. It brings me such joy to educate women and let them know that YES, there is actually another way! Most women I talk to have never heard of Thermography, also known as digital infrared imaging and this furiates me! How can women not know about this amazing breast imaging system? Thermography is a superior breast imaging system based on your bodies thermoregulation, which is as unique to each individual as their finger print. The main difference between mammography and thermography would be that a mammogram is an anatomical screening. This means it is only going to pick up a large mass or dense breast tissue. It will not tell you if that mass has a feed, blood flow, or could possibly be cancerous, and it exposes you to HIGH amounts of radiation. Studies have proven that you increase your breast cancer rate by 5% every time you get a mammogram. Thermography is a physiological screening meaning it can pick up neovascularity, angiogenesis, pathology, inflammation, and more which are all precursors for disease and or cancer. I don't know about you, but I want to detect any issue going on in my body as soon as possible, not after it has turned into a major issue. During Your thermogram about six to eight images are taken of your breast. This includes axial areas and your chest wall which is where most issues start and are often missed. I would HIGHLY recommend every woman to find a clinic in their area and make this adjunct screening a part of their wellness routine!
Diet and breast health
Our breast tissue is mostly made of fat. We store toxins in our fat cells to protect ourselves from over burdening our bodies with toxins and to ensure we keep our blood pH within its proper range. Due to these toxins, endocrine disrupters, and more are stored in our fat cells. Our breasts are the perfect dumping site for these toxins. We are what we eat, so eating whole foods full of nutrition is so important, not only for breast health, but for our overall health. We are exposed to so many toxins on a daily basis that are out of our control. Whether it be in our air, soil, drinking water etc. This is why it is so important to take control of the things that you can, such as what we put into our bodies on a daily basis. Eating freshly prepared whole foods will not only flood your body with nutrition but it will help you to avoid estrogen mimicking compounds that are found in most preservatives, plastics, food additives, canned foods, and more. Alkaline foods are also extremely important when it comes to breast health. An acidic pH will force your body to store more fat cells. Fat cells, as explained before, store toxins in order to keep your blood from getting to acidic. An alkaline pH will allow your body to burn off these toxic fat cells rather than holding onto them. This will allow your body to eliminate excess toxins stored in the body.
Herbs and supplements for breast health
Every cell in the body contains and utilizes iodine. Iodine has many effects on the body; hormone production, nerve and muscle function, metabolism, tissue growth and repair, and cell respiration. Approximately one third of the population is iodine deficient. Iodine deficiencies can occur not only because of inadequate intake, but also due to damaging toxins, we are exposed to everyday. Bromide, a flame retardant sprayed on all mattresses and flammable products competes with iodine on a cellular level and always wins. Given the various functions of the thyroid it is easy to see how a deficiency can lead to others issues in the body. Iodine is crucial in the balance of the endocrine system and is directly linked to breast cancer risks. Normal breast architecture requires adequate amounts of iodine. In a deficient state the breasts and thyroid compete for available iodine. Iodine deficiency leads to increased cell growth, increased endocrine production, and increased sensitivity to estrogen in the breast tissue which are all risks and precursors for breast cancer.
Vitamin d3 is very well known for its role in breast health. In a 2016 a study published in a major cancer journal looked at the association between vitamin D levels and survival in 1666 women with newly diagnosed invasive breast cancer and the results were astounding. Women with the highest vitamin D levels were 28% less likely to die from all causes as compared to women with the lowest vitamin D levels. The association was even stronger in premenopausal women, those with the highest D levels were 55% less likely to die from all causes and 63% less likely to die from breast cancer as compared to premenopausal women with the lowest D levels.
Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce risk in several ways. It can reduce the effect of estrogen like compounds and even decrease inflammation. Omega-3's are only received through our diet. Cod liver oil and healthy sources of fish are great sources of omega-3's. Walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, and egg yolks are also extremely high in fatty acids. Try incorporating any of these sources into your diet on a daily basis. I put flax and chia seeds directly into my smoothie every morning! You can also take a high quality supplement if getting enough from your diet is not possible.
Curcumin, a concentrated source of Turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant found to boost breast health and decrease inflammation in the body.
Chlorophyll can increase oxygen in the blood, which can increase energy, relieve fatigue, and cure certain blood disorders. It supplies the much needed micronutrient magnesium, which is lacking in today's common diet. It possesses antioxidant capabilities. It alkalizes our body's overall pH. It is also a vital component to the plant-kingdom. Since we know that a diet high in plant-based foods significantly reduces the risk of a wide array of diseases, it can be assumed chlorophyll intake plays a part in that risk reduction.
Helps to alkalize pH and utilize vitamin C.
Skincare and breast health
Our skin is the largest organ of the body. Sixty percent of what we put on our skin goes directly into our blood stream. Cancer and health risk experts have concluded reviews that indicate mainstream cosmetics and personal hygiene products pose the highest cancer risk exposures to the general public, even higher than smoking! How are these products even allowed on our shelves! Educating yourself on safe brands and products is so important to your overall health. You can control what you put into your skin so make sure they are options that will enhance your health not destroy it. If you could change one thing out of your skin care routine the first item I would choose to replace would be your deodorant. Many deodorants contain estrogen mimicking chemicals and parabens. There is a direct link in antiperspirants and breast cancer. You can try changing to toxin-free deodorant brands such as primal life organics all natural deodorant.
Self Care and Breast Health
Our thoughts are the number one acidifier of the body and can literally change our bodies overall pH. It takes ten positive thoughts to replace one negative one! Self care and nurturing is so important but is the last thing we tend to do for ourselves. Meditation, Epsom salt baths, breath work, exercise and more can all directly lead to a healthier body. Your body will feel and respond positively to the love and positive energy coming from self care and healing. This allows your cells to receive all of the proper nutrients and emotions they need to reproduce in a healthy way. When you wake up in the morning look in the mirror and tell yourself "you are beautiful, you are strong, you are perfect just the way you are."
Bras and breast health
Research has shown that bras can cause increased risk of breast cancer, especially ones containing an underwire. Wearing a snug fitting bra can restrict lymph flow, which impedes the bodies ability to remove toxins from that area. Fabrics are also important when it comes to your bra. Many fabrics today contain estrogen disrupting chemicals. Everyday use and wear of these fabrics exposes your breast to these chemicals daily and can lead to breast issues and or cancer. One of my favorite brands for safe bras is PACT LLC.
