Many women have experienced at least one mammogram in their life. The experience is not pleasant in the slightest bit but most women think they have no other options. It brings me such joy to educate women and let them know that YES, there is actually another way! Most women I talk to have never heard of Thermography, also known as digital infrared imaging and this furiates me! How can women not know about this amazing breast imaging system? Thermography is a superior breast imaging system based on your bodies thermoregulation, which is as unique to each individual as their finger print. The main difference between mammography and thermography would be that a mammogram is an anatomical screening. This means it is only going to pick up a large mass or dense breast tissue. It will not tell you if that mass has a feed, blood flow, or could possibly be cancerous, and it exposes you to HIGH amounts of radiation. Studies have proven that you increase your breast cancer rate by 5% every time you get a mammogram. Thermography is a physiological screening meaning it can pick up neovascularity, angiogenesis, pathology, inflammation, and more which are all precursors for disease and or cancer. I don't know about you, but I want to detect any issue going on in my body as soon as possible, not after it has turned into a major issue. During Your thermogram about six to eight images are taken of your breast. This includes axial areas and your chest wall which is where most issues start and are often missed. I would HIGHLY recommend every woman to find a clinic in their area and make this adjunct screening a part of their wellness routine!
Diet and breast health
Our breast tissue is mostly made of fat. We store toxins in our fat cells to protect ourselves from over burdening our bodies with toxins and to ensure we keep our blood pH within its proper range. Due to these toxins, endocrine disrupters, and more are stored in our fat cells. Our breasts are the perfect dumping site for these toxins. We are what we eat, so eating whole foods full of nutrition is so important, not only for breast health, but for our overall health. We are exposed to so many toxins on a daily basis that are out of our control. Whether it be in our air, soil, drinking water etc. This is why it is so important to take control of the things that you can, such as what we put into our bodies on a daily basis. Eating freshly prepared whole foods will not only flood your body with nutrition but it will help you to avoid estrogen mimicking compounds that are found in most preservatives, plastics, food additives, canned foods, and more. Alkaline foods are also extremely important when it comes to breast health. An acidic pH will force your body to store more fat cells. Fat cells, as explained before, store toxins in order to keep your blood from getting to acidic. An alkaline pH will allow your body to burn off these toxic fat cells rather than holding onto them. This will allow your body to eliminate excess toxins stored in the body.
Herbs and supplements for breast health
IODINE
Every cell in the body contains and utilizes iodine. Iodine has many effects on the body; hormone production, nerve and muscle function, metabolism, tissue growth and repair, and cell respiration. Approximately one third of the population is iodine deficient. Iodine deficiencies can occur not only because of inadequate intake, but also due to damaging toxins, we are exposed to everyday. Bromide, a flame retardant sprayed on all mattresses and flammable products competes with iodine on a cellular level and always wins. Given the various functions of the thyroid it is easy to see how a deficiency can lead to others issues in the body. Iodine is crucial in the balance of the endocrine system and is directly linked to breast cancer risks. Normal breast architecture requires adequate amounts of iodine. In a deficient state the breasts and thyroid compete for available iodine. Iodine deficiency leads to increased cell growth, increased endocrine production, and increased sensitivity to estrogen in the breast tissue which are all risks and precursors for breast cancer.
VITAMIN D
Vitamin d3 is very well known for its role in breast health. In a 2016 a study published in a major cancer journal looked at the association between vitamin D levels and survival in 1666 women with newly diagnosed invasive breast cancer and the results were astounding. Women with the highest vitamin D levels were 28% less likely to die from all causes as compared to women with the lowest vitamin D levels. The association was even stronger in premenopausal women, those with the highest D levels were 55% less likely to die from all causes and 63% less likely to die from breast cancer as compared to premenopausal women with the lowest D levels.
OMEGA-3's
Omega-3 fatty acids can help reduce risk in several ways. It can reduce the effect of estrogen like compounds and even decrease inflammation. Omega-3's are only received through our diet. Cod liver oil and healthy sources of fish are great sources of omega-3's. Walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds, and egg yolks are also extremely high in fatty acids. Try incorporating any of these sources into your diet on a daily basis. I put flax and chia seeds directly into my smoothie every morning! You can also take a high quality supplement if getting enough from your diet is not possible.
CURCUMIN
Curcumin, a concentrated source of Turmeric, is a powerful antioxidant found to boost breast health and decrease inflammation in the body.
CHLOROPHYLL
Chlorophyll can increase oxygen in the blood, which can increase energy, relieve fatigue, and cure certain blood disorders. It supplies the much needed micronutrient magnesium, which is lacking in today's common diet. It possesses antioxidant capabilities. It alkalizes our body's overall pH. It is also a vital component to the plant-kingdom. Since we know that a diet high in plant-based foods significantly reduces the risk of a wide array of diseases, it can be assumed chlorophyll intake plays a part in that risk reduction.
CALCIUM
Helps to alkalize pH and utilize vitamin C.
Skincare and breast health
Our skin is the largest organ of the body. Sixty percent of what we put on our skin goes directly into our blood stream. Cancer and health risk experts have concluded reviews that indicate mainstream cosmetics and personal hygiene products pose the highest cancer risk exposures to the general public, even higher than smoking! How are these products even allowed on our shelves! Educating yourself on safe brands and products is so important to your overall health. You can control what you put into your skin so make sure they are options that will enhance your health not destroy it. If you could change one thing out of your skin care routine the first item I would choose to replace would be your deodorant. Many deodorants contain estrogen mimicking chemicals and parabens. There is a direct link in antiperspirants and breast cancer. You can try changing to toxin-free deodorant brands such as primal life organics all natural deodorant.
Self Care and Breast Health
Our thoughts are the number one acidifier of the body and can literally change our bodies overall pH. It takes ten positive thoughts to replace one negative one! Self care and nurturing is so important but is the last thing we tend to do for ourselves. Meditation, Epsom salt baths, breath work, exercise and more can all directly lead to a healthier body. Your body will feel and respond positively to the love and positive energy coming from self care and healing. This allows your cells to receive all of the proper nutrients and emotions they need to reproduce in a healthy way. When you wake up in the morning look in the mirror and tell yourself "you are beautiful, you are strong, you are perfect just the way you are."
Bras and breast health
Research has shown that bras can cause increased risk of breast cancer, especially ones containing an underwire. Wearing a snug fitting bra can restrict lymph flow, which impedes the bodies ability to remove toxins from that area. Fabrics are also important when it comes to your bra. Many fabrics today contain estrogen disrupting chemicals. Everyday use and wear of these fabrics exposes your breast to these chemicals daily and can lead to breast issues and or cancer. One of my favorite brands for safe bras is PACT LLC.
